Gil Larsen has run this stretch nine times and never once looked at the burn scar straight on. Two hundred miles of standing black timber, no shelter, no sound but runners on crust. This year something is running it with him, and it is patient in the way only old things are.

The story is about a dog named Ruby and the decision Gil made at a creek crossing four years ago. The Keelut is only there to make him say it out loud.

Transcript excerpt

00:00 JonahEvening. Or morning — the clock in here quit having an opinion a while back.
00:41 JonahTonight's tape came in from a long way north of anywhere I've ever been. Fella by the name of Larsen. Runs dogs.
01:12 JonahI'll say this before we start it: what follows him out there don't want him dead. It wants him to admit something. That's worse.
