Calvin Marsh had a report of an abandoned camp, a stove still warm, and gear laid out like whoever owned it meant to come back. What he did not have was an explanation, and the people who could have given him one were careful with him — careful in a way that was kindness, not superstition.
The episode is careful too. The Ojibwe understanding of what walks that shore is not ours to flatten into a monster, and the ranger's mistake is treating it like a case file.
